Continuous culture of ruminal microorganisms in chemically defined medium. II. Culture medium studies.
Ruminal ciliates have been grown in continuous culture in chemically defined media and in the absence of viable bacteria. Oligotrichic ruminal ciliates seem to require insoluble carbohydrates for growth; the holotrichic ciliates require soluble carbohydrates, but at low concentrations. Both groups of ciliates utilize amino acids as their principal nitrogen source when these are supplied in micr...
متن کاملContinuous Culture
Continuous culture on mixed glucose-lactose or glucose-butyrate media inoculated with river water led to a population composed of a pseudomonad and a coliform. The glucose was used preferentially to the other carbon source, and the utilization of the secondary carbon source was greatly reduced at high growth rates. Significant amounts of acetate were excreted even though the cultures were limit...
متن کاملContinuous culture of rat C6 glioma in serum-free medium
In this communication we describe serum-free culture conditions for the serial propagation of the C6 glioma cell line. The growth rate, saturation density, and morphology of these cells are equivalent to those of their serum-grown counterparts when cultured in a 3:1 mixture of Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium and Ham's medium F-12 supplemented with trace elements, insulin, transferrin, fibrob...
متن کاملMedium for toxin production by Clostridium perfringens in continuous culture.
A tryptone-salts medium for continuous growth and alpha toxin production of Clostridium perfringens type A in an adapted chemostat is described. In such steady-state cultures, fermentative and biochemical activity of C. perfringens remained unchanged. Toxigenic ability to produce alpha, theta, and nu toxins was preserved.
